Session 1 of 8
Look Carefully!
Today we use our senses to find out about things.
This is the first thing every data scientist does!
Data Science for Young Minds · Grade 1

What We Will Do Today
Our Plan
- Mystery bag — feel without looking!
- Use our senses to observe
- Learn words to describe things
- Partner activity — feel, describe, look
- Brain break — slow animal walk
- Draw and label what we noticed
3 / 15
Mystery Time!
The Mystery Bag
Your teacher has a bag. Something is inside.
DO NOT LOOK YET!
Just reach in. What do you FEEL?
It is okay to just look if you do not want to reach in. Both ways are great!
4 / 15
Lesson 1
We Use Our Senses
When we observe, we use our senses on purpose and carefully.
Touch
- Smooth or bumpy?
- Soft or hard?
- Big or small?
Observing is slow and careful. We pay attention!
5 / 15
Lesson 2
Describing Words
An attribute is one way to describe something.
We use attributes to tell about things!
Color
red · blue · green · yellow
Shape
round · square · pointy · flat
Size
big · small · tiny · large
Texture
smooth · bumpy · rough · soft

Lesson 2
Same and Different
Two things can be the same in one way and different in another way!
Same color!
A blue button and a blue block are BOTH blue.
Different shape!
The button is round. The block is square. They are different shapes.
The same objects can be the same in some ways and different in others!
7 / 15
Activity Time!
Partner Mystery Bag!
Work with your partner. Here is what you do:
- Partner A — reach in. Say 2 things you feel.
- Partner B — draw what you imagine!
- Both — look inside. What more do you see?
- Swap! Partner B reaches in next.
It is okay to just LOOK instead of touching. Both ways count!

Activity Helper
Words to Help You Describe
Stuck? Try these!
Color words
- red · blue · yellow
- green · orange · white
- black · purple · pink
Touch words
- smooth · bumpy · rough
- hard · soft · squishy
- pointy · flat · round
9 / 15
Brain Break — Slow Animal Walk!
Move like a slow turtle looking very carefully at the floor.
What do you NOTICE as you walk?
Then HOP like a bunny back to your seat!
10 / 15
Debrief
What Did You Find?
- What did you feel first?
- Were you surprised when you looked?
- What could you feel but NOT see?
- What could you see but NOT feel?
Using senses together tells us MORE than using just one!
11 / 15
Worksheet Time
Draw and Label
Pick ONE object from your bag.
- Draw it in the big box
- Write or draw the COLOR
- Write or draw the SHAPE
- Write or draw the SIZE
- Write or draw the TEXTURE
You can draw a picture instead of writing a word — that is great too!
12 / 15
Think About It
Observe vs. Guess
Observe
- It IS round
- It IS blue
- It IS smooth
You can check — it is true!
Guess
- It is pretty
- It is my favorite
- It is the best
Different people might say different things!
13 / 15
Words We Learned
Our New Words
Observe
Look (or feel!) carefully and on purpose
Attribute
One way to describe something — color, shape, size, texture
Describe
Use words to tell what something is like
Same / Different
Same = alike in that way · Different = not alike
14 / 15
Share!
Tell Us One Thing!
"One word about what you noticed today."
You can:
- Say a word out loud
- Point to something on your worksheet
- Draw a quick picture
All ways of sharing are great!
15 / 15
Great Work!
Session 1 Done! ⭐
- We used our senses to observe things
- We learned attribute words — color, shape, size, texture
- We found things that are the same AND different
- We drew and labeled what we noticed
Next time — Session 2: We will put things into groups! We call that sorting.
Tonight: find ONE thing at home and notice 2 things about it. Tell someone!
