TimeBlockWhat's Happening
0โ€“5๐ŸŽฏ HookShow a paper with 23 random check marks. "How quickly can you count these?" Then show same data as tally marks grouped in 5s. "Which is faster?"
5โ€“15๐Ÿ“– LessonTally marks: | | | | ฬถ = 5. How to draw them. The crossing mark. Groups of 5 make counting fast.
15โ€“28๐ŸŽฎ PracticeTeacher calls out Session 3 survey results one by one โ€” whole class adds tally marks to the board chart together.
28โ€“40๐ŸŽฎ BuildStudents build their own tally chart on worksheet using their Session 3 data. Add totals row.
40โ€“47โœ๏ธ WorksheetComplete tally chart, count totals, answer comparison questions.
47โ€“50๐Ÿง  Brain Break + CloseFinger-count the tally groups. Preview: next session we draw bar graphs!
Key teaching moment: The crossing fifth tally mark is the hardest. Model it slowly multiple times. Have students practice in the air with their finger before touching paper.
๐Ÿ“ฆ Materials Needed
Session 3 survey data (students bring their recording sheets) Whiteboard + markers for class demo Graph paper or lined paper Pencils + rulers Visual anchor poster: | | | | ฬถ = 5 (make before class)
๐Ÿ’ก Make a large visual anchor โ€” draw a group of 5 tally marks in big, clear strokes on chart paper and post it where everyone can see it all session.
๐Ÿ“š Key Vocabulary
Tally mark โ€” a vertical line (|) used to count things one at a time
Tally chart โ€” a table that uses tally marks to organize and count data
Total โ€” the final count of all tally marks in a group
Frequency โ€” how many times something appears in the data

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions + Teacher Notes
  • "Why do we group tally marks in 5s instead of just counting all the lines?"
โ†’ Groups of 5 let us count by 5s โ€” which is much faster than counting single marks one by one. Show: count 23 single marks vs. counting 4 groups of 5 + 3. Which is easier?
  • "What is the fifth tally mark different from the others?"
โ†’ It crosses through the group of 4 โ€” like putting a fence around them. This is the "bundle" that makes the group of 5 complete. It's a universal system used by scientists worldwide.
  • "If I have 3 groups of 5 tally marks and 2 extra, how many is that?"
โ†’ 3 ร— 5 = 15, plus 2 = 17. This is a natural multiplication preview. Students can count by 5s on their fingers first, then add the extras.
  • "What does the 'Total' row tell us that the tally marks don't?"
โ†’ The total is one clear number โ€” easy to read and compare. The tally marks show HOW we counted; the total shows WHAT we found. Both matter.
  • "Could you make a tally chart about something other than our survey?"
โ†’ Yes! Tally charts can track anything countable: cars passing by, birds at a feeder, letters in a book. The skill transfers to any data collection context.
๐ŸŽฎ Tally Chart โ€” Board Demo Guide
Draw this table on the board before class. Fill it in live as a class using Session 3 data.
Board template:
SeasonTally MarksTotal
โ˜€๏ธ Summer
๐Ÿ‚ Fall
โ„๏ธ Winter
๐ŸŒธ Spring
TOTAL
Tally mark visual anchor โ€” post large on wall:
| = 1    | | = 2    | | | = 3
| | | | = 4    ฬถ| | | | | = 5
The fifth mark CROSSES through the group of 4 โ€” like a fence!
Tip: Have students practice drawing tally marks in the air with their finger before putting pencil to paper. "Draw a line โ€” draw another โ€” and another โ€” and another โ€” now cross them all!"

๐ŸŽฏ Opening Hook
Before class, write 23 random check marks in a scattered pattern on one side of the board. On the other side, write the same 23 as tally marks in groups of 5.
"Count the marks on the left. Go!" (time them). Then: "Now count the right side."
โ†’ The contrast makes the lesson self-evident. Students discover why tally groups exist before you tell them.
๐Ÿง  Brain Break
Finger Tally Count!
Teacher holds up a number of fingers. Students hold up how many groups of 5 that is (using one hand = 5, two hands = 10, etc.).
Then: "If our class had 7 people choose Summer, how many tally groups is that? Hold up your fingers to show."
Answer: 1 group of 5 + 2 extra = | | | | ฬถ | |
๐Ÿง  ND-Friendly Tips
  • Visual anchor all session โ€” The | | | | ฬถ = 5 poster must stay visible throughout. Students will look at it repeatedly โ€” that's the point.
  • Fingers before pencil โ€” Count on fingers first, then translate to tally marks. Tactile counting bridges the abstract symbol.
  • Graph paper for alignment โ€” Tally marks in graph paper cells stay neat and don't drift. Offer it as a tool, not a correction.
  • Count aloud together โ€” When filling in the class chart, count each mark out loud as a class: "One, two, three, four, FIVE โ€” cross it!"
  • Allow finger-tracing โ€” Students who struggle with fine motor can trace the tally marks on the visual anchor before drawing their own.
