Session 1 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 1: I Can Sort!
Overview
Sort a collection of objects by color. Discover that putting things in groups helps you see patterns.
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: Looking at Colors
Tip: Learn to identify and name colors in a collection. Every object has a color — and color is your first sorting tool. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about identifying colors in a collection of objects?"
Lesson 2: Sorting Into Piles
Tip: Take a mixed collection and sort it by color into separate piles. See how groups form naturally. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about sorting objects into groups by one attribute (color)?"
Lesson 3: Counting Each Pile
Tip: Count how many objects are in each color group. Practice saying 'There are ___ red ones.' Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about counting objects in each group?"
Lesson 4: Which Group Is Biggest?
Tip: Compare your piles. Which color has the most? Which has the fewest? How do you know? Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about comparing groups: most, fewest, same?"
