Session 2 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 2: More Ways to Sort
Overview
The same objects can be sorted by size, shape, or texture. Learn that there are many ways to organize the world.
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: Sorting by Size
Tip: Learn to arrange objects from smallest to biggest and sort them into size groups. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about sorting objects by size (big, medium, small)?"
Lesson 2: Sorting by Shape
Tip: Circles, squares, triangles — sort objects by their shape. What shapes do you see? Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about sorting objects by shape (round, square, long)?"
Lesson 3: Sorting by Texture
Tip: Smooth, rough, soft, hard — touch your objects and sort them by how they feel. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about sorting objects by texture (smooth, rough, soft)?"
Lesson 4: Same Objects, Different Groups
Tip: Sort the SAME collection three different ways. See how the groups change each time! Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about understanding that one collection can be sorted many different ways?"
