Session 4 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 4: More, Less, or Equal?
Overview
Compare groups: which has more? Which has less? Which are the same? Learn comparison language.
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: More Than, Less Than
Tip: Learn the words 'more than,' 'less than,' and 'equal to.' Use them to compare two groups. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about using 'more than,' 'less than,' and 'equal to'?"
Lesson 2: Lining Up to Compare
Tip: Line up two groups of objects side by side. The longer line has more! A visual way to compare. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about comparing groups visually by lining them up?"
Lesson 3: Comparing With Numbers
Tip: Use your counting skills to compare. 8 is more than 5. 3 is less than 7. Numbers make comparing exact. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about comparing groups using numbers?"
Lesson 4: The Comparison Game
Tip: Play a game where you sort, count, and compare groups. Use full sentences: 'Red has more than blue.' Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about making comparison statements about data?"
