Session 2 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 2: Measuring With Tools
Overview
Use rulers to measure length, scales to measure weight, and clocks to measure time. Get exact numbers.
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: What Is Measuring?
Tip: Measuring means using a tool to find out exactly how much. It is more precise than guessing! Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about understanding what measurement is and why it matters?"
Lesson 2: Using a Ruler
Tip: Learn to use a ruler correctly: start at zero, read the number at the end. Measure in inches or centimeters. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about using a ruler to measure length accurately?"
Lesson 3: Measuring 10 Objects
Tip: Measure 10 different objects with your ruler. Record each measurement in a table with the object name and number. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about recording measurements in a data table?"
Lesson 4: Units and Labels
Tip: Always write the unit! '7 inches' means something. '7' alone does not. Learn why units matter. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about understanding why units (inches, cm) are important?"
