Session 5 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 5: Reading Bar Graphs
Overview
Now that you can build them, learn to read them. Which bar is tallest? What does that mean?
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: Reading the Bars
Tip: Practice reading bar graphs: find the tallest bar, the shortest bar, and read the exact numbers. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about reading values from bar graphs?"
Lesson 2: Answering Questions
Tip: Answer 'how many' and 'which is the most' questions by reading bar graphs. The answers are in the bars! Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about answering data questions using bar graphs?"
Lesson 3: Comparing Bars
Tip: Figure out 'how many more' by comparing two bars. If dogs=8 and cats=5, dogs have 3 more. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about comparing bars to find differences?"
Lesson 4: Bar Graph Detective
Tip: Become a bar graph detective! Given only a graph, figure out the full story of the data. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about interpreting bar graphs to tell a data story?"
