Session 6 Family Guide
Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 6: Comparing Two Groups
Overview
Compare data from two different groups using side-by-side bar graphs.
Facilitating Each Lesson
Lesson 1: Same Question, Two Groups
Tip: Ask the same question to two different groups. Do 2nd graders and 1st graders like the same things? Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about asking the same question to two groups?"
Lesson 2: Side-by-Side Graphs
Tip: Build two bar graphs next to each other using the same scale. Now you can compare groups visually! Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about building side-by-side bar graphs for comparison?"
Lesson 3: What Is the Same? What Is Different?
Tip: Look at both graphs together. Where do the groups agree? Where do they differ? Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about identifying similarities and differences between groups?"
Lesson 4: Writing Comparison Sentences
Tip: Practice writing: 'Both groups liked ___ the most, but Group A liked ___ more than Group B did.' Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about writing comparison sentences using data?"
