Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 8: Your Data Project

Overview

Put it all together. Pick a question, collect data, make a visualization, and present your findings.

Facilitating Each Lesson

Lesson 1: Choose Your Question

Tip: Pick a topic you genuinely care about and write a clear, specific, data-answerable question. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about brainstorming topics you are curious about?"

Lesson 2: Collect and Organize

Tip: Go out and gather your data using the methods you planned. Then organize it into tables and tallies. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about executing your data collection plan?"

Lesson 3: Create Your Visualization

Tip: Build the graph that tells your data's story. Choose the right type and make it clear. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about choosing the right graph type for your data?"

Lesson 4: Present and Reflect

Tip: Share your findings with an audience and reflect on what you learned. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about structuring your presentation: question → method → findings → conclusion?"
