Session 1 Family Guide

Data Science for Young Minds — Tips for families facilitating Session 1: Reading Graphs Like a Pro

Overview

Master reading bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts. Learn what each part tells you and how to extract information quickly.

Facilitating Each Lesson

Lesson 1: Bar Chart Mastery

Tip: Go beyond basic bar charts. Learn to read grouped bars, stacked bars, and horizontal bars. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about review: the parts of a bar chart (title, axes, labels, bars)?"

Lesson 2: Understanding Line Graphs

Tip: Learn what line graphs show that bar charts cannot — change over time, trends, and direction. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about what makes line graphs special: showing change over time?"

Lesson 3: Pie Charts and Percentages

Tip: Learn to read pie charts, understand what they show, and when they are (and are not) the right choice. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about what a pie chart shows: parts of a whole?"

Lesson 4: The Graph Reading Challenge

Tip: Put all your skills together. Read 10 different graphs and answer questions about each one — fast and accurately. Take time to let your child explore and share their thoughts.
Try asking: "What do you think about speed reading: quickly identifying graph type, title, and key message?"
