๐Ÿ“š Key Vocabulary
Unit Price โ€” cost per standard unit (per oz, per item, per gram)
Value โ€” what you actually GET for your money (quality, use, longevity)
Price โ€” what you PAY (the number on the tag)
Impulse Buy โ€” an unplanned purchase made on emotion, not reason
Consumer โ€” someone who buys goods or services
Shukr (ุดูƒุฑ) โ€” gratitude; appreciating what you already have
๐Ÿง  ND-Friendly Teaching Tips
  • Unit pricing โ€” always use concrete visual examples (two yogurt containers). Show the math on board.
  • "Best Buy" game โ€” physical comparison sheets work better than mental math for many students.
  • Impulse buying โ€” avoid shame. "Everyone does it. The skill is recognizing it."
  • 24-hour rule โ€” frame as a practical tool, not a punishment. "It's not 'no' โ€” it's 'not right now.'"
  • Shukr โ€” connect to feelings: "Appreciating what you have actually makes people happier." (Science supports this!)
  • Regret journal โ€” keep it light. A $2 snack counts. Don't press for big stories.
  • Post agenda early โ€” "In 5 minutes we switch to the game."

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions + Teacher Notes
  • "Is a $1 snack always a better deal than a $3 snack?"
โ†’ No โ€” if $3 snack is bigger or better quality, unit price matters. This opens the lesson.
  • "Has anyone bought something cheap that broke quickly?"
โ†’ Price vs. value. Sometimes paying more is the smarter long-term choice.
  • "What makes you want to buy something you didn't plan to?"
โ†’ Colors, ads, peer pressure, hunger, emotions. All valid. No judgment.
  • "Does the 24-hour rule actually work?"
โ†’ For big items: yes. For $2 snack: probably not worth it. Apply proportionally.
  • "What does Shukr have to do with spending?"
โ†’ Gratitude = contentment = less desire for unnecessary things. Practical spiritual link.
  • "Is all impulse buying bad?"
โ†’ Not necessarily! Spontaneous gift for a friend = impulse buy that might be meaningful. Nuance matters.
๐ŸŽฎ "Best Buy" Comparison Game Setup
Groups get a comparison sheet with 3 scenarios. Find the best deal โ€” but define "best"!
Scenario 1 โ€” Yogurt:
Brand A: 8 oz for $2.00 = $0.25/oz
Brand B: 12 oz for $2.40 = $0.20/oz โ†’ B wins on unit price
Scenario 2 โ€” Phone case:
$8 case breaks in 2 months vs. $20 case lasts 2 years
$8 ร— 12 = $96/year vs. $20/2 years = $10/year โ†’ $20 case wins on VALUE
Scenario 3 โ€” Lunch:
$3 cafeteria vs. $1.50 home-packed
Is it always about price? Consider time, taste, nutrition, convenience.
Debrief: Did anyone change their mind about what "best" means? What factors besides price matter?

๐ŸŽฏ Opening Hook
"Raise your hand if you've ever bought something and regretted it immediately."
(Most hands go up โ€” laugh together)
"What happened? Did you use it? Return it? Leave it in a drawer?"
"Today we learn to buy SMARTER โ€” so fewer regrets."
โœ๏ธ Journal Prompt
Write on board:
"Describe a purchase you made that you regret. What would you do differently now?"
8 min quiet. Keep it low-stakes โ€” even a $1 choice counts. 2 share.
