Session 7 — Shapes around me — 2D shapes
Kindergarten · Math for Young Minds Total time: ~17 minutes Common Core: K.G.A.2, K.G.B.4 Today's idea: Shapes are hiding all around us. We can name them by their sides and corners.
What students will be able to do
By the end of this session, the student can:
- Name a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle.
- Find these shapes on real things in the room.
- Notice how many sides and corners each shape has.
Materials
- Worksheet (one per student)
- Pencil or crayon
- The room itself — for shape hunting
Substitution: No worksheet handy? Have students point to shapes and draw them on blank paper. The room is the real material today.
New words

That's the entire vocabulary for today. No other terms.
Heads-up — common confusions
- Everything round is a "circle." Some round shapes are ovals (stretched out). A circle is round all the way around the same.
- Square vs. rectangle. A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't always a square. Don't worry if this feels tricky — just notice both have 4 sides.
- Tilted shapes. A triangle balanced on its point is still a triangle. An upside-down shape is still that shape. Turn your head — it's the same.
- Counting sides. Some kids will skip a side or count one twice. Slow them down. Touch each side as you count.
Plan
1 · Hello & today's idea — 2 min
"Today we're going on a shape hunt. Shapes are everywhere — right here in this room."
Draw a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle on the board. Big and clear.
Point to each.
"Circle. Square. Triangle. Rectangle. Say them with me."
Trace the sides with your finger. Count out loud: "Square — one, two, three, four sides."
2 · Hands-on explore — 6 min
Stand up. Sweep your arm around the room.
"Eyes up. Let's find a circle together. Something round, with no corners. Point to one."
(Problem 1 — together.) Let students point and call out. A clock face. A coin. A wheel. Celebrate each one.
"Yes — the clock is a circle. Round, no corners."
Now sit students down with their worksheets.
"Now find a square — 4 sides, all the same. Draw it on your paper."
(Problem 2 — solo.) Walk around. Watch for:
- Are they really looking at the room, not just guessing?
- Do their drawings have 4 sides, roughly even?
Gently help: "Touch the sides. One, two, three, four. All the same?"
Examples they might find: a tile, a window, a sticky note.
3 · Connect to the math — 3 min
Bring everyone back together. Point to your triangle on the board.
"A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. Watch — one, two, three."
Touch each side.
"Even if I turn it…" (draw one on its point) "…still a triangle. 3 sides. 3 corners."
Now point to the rectangle.
"A rectangle has 4 sides — 2 long, 2 short. Like a door. Like a book."
Hold up a book. Trace its sides.
"A square has 4 sides too. A square is a special rectangle where all the sides match."
Don't push this. Just plant the seed.
4 · Practice with support — 5 min
"Back to your worksheet. Find a triangle in the room. Draw it. Count its sides."
(Problem 3 — solo.) Walk around. If a child draws something with 4 sides, kneel down: "Let's count together. One, two, three, four. That's a square. A triangle has how many?"
Answer they should land on: 3.
Then:
"Last one — this is the stretch. Look around. How many rectangles can you find? Make a tally mark for each one."
(Problem 4 — stretch.) Show one tally mark on the board. Remind them: books, doors, windows, even the worksheet itself.
Let them hunt. No "right" number. Just looking is the win.
5 · What we did + Try at home — 1 min
"Today you learned 4 shapes — circle, square, triangle, rectangle. And you found them right here in our room."
Hold up the family guide.
"At home tonight, go on a shape hunt. Find one circle, one square, one triangle, one rectangle. A plate is a circle. A window is a rectangle. A slice of pizza is a triangle. Draw them, or just tell someone."
Observation rubric — what to notice in this session
Use this during the session, not as a test. One observation per student is plenty.

In Session 8 — Taller, shorter, longer, we close out Kindergarten by comparing how big or long things are — taller, shorter, the same. Same idea as today: math is hiding all around us.

Tonight: hunt for shapes around your home
What your child did today
In class today, we went on a shape hunt.
We looked for four shapes hiding all around the room: circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. We named them, pointed them out on real objects, and counted how many sides and corners each one has.
A clock face is a circle. A door is a rectangle. Shapes are everywhere once you start noticing them.
Why this matters
Shapes are how children begin to see math in the real world. Before kids work with shapes on paper, they need to recognize them on plates, windows, books, and tiles.
We also practice noticing sides and corners — the small details that make a triangle a triangle, no matter which way it's turned.
This builds the foundation for geometry later on. We're not in a rush. The goal is for your child to feel like a shape detective, not to memorize definitions.
🏠 Try this tonight (1 minute)
Go on a quick shape hunt together. Find one of each shape somewhere in your home.

The script:
"Can you find a circle in this room? Now a square? A triangle? A rectangle?"
When they find one, ask:
"How many sides does it have? How many corners?"
That's the whole activity. Notice, name, count.
Words your child is learning

A small note: not every round thing is a circle (some are ovals). And a square is actually a special kind of rectangle — but a rectangle isn't always a square. No need to push this; just something to know.
Also: a triangle balanced on its point is still a triangle. Tilted shapes confuse a lot of kids, and that's normal.
If your child says…
"This is easy — I already know shapes."
Wonderful. Ask them to find a triangle that's turned a different way, or a rectangle hiding somewhere unexpected. Then have them count the sides out loud to be sure.
"I can't find one."
That's okay. Give them a hint by pointing to the general area. "There's a rectangle near the front door — can you spot it?" Finding it themselves is what matters, not finding it fast.
"I don't want to."
No problem. Try again tomorrow when something catches their eye — a cookie (circle), a sandwich cut into triangles, a book on the table. Shape-hunting works best when it feels like a game, not a lesson.

The Big Rules
