Claude
Summarize a long PDF without reading the middle parts yourself.
~15 min read + 10 min hands-on1 Why this tool matters
Claude is Anthropic's chatbot. It has two superpowers that matter for working professionals: it handles much longer documents than most alternatives (you can paste an entire handbook, contract, or journal article), and it writes with a steadier, more deliberate tone. If ChatGPT is the brainstorming partner, Claude is the one you hand the long document to before a meeting.
2 Walkthrough
- Sign in at claude.ai. The free plan is plenty for today.
- Find a long PDF on your desktop — a policy, a report, an article. Drag it into the chat.
- Ask: Summarize this in three levels: one sentence, one paragraph, and one page. Use bullet points for the page-long version.
- Scan the three summaries. Notice which level is most useful for your purpose.
- Follow up with: What are the three most important questions a reader should ask after reading this?
3 Your turn
Today’s exercise
Take a document you need to be familiar with by the end of this week — a meeting prep read, a memo, a research paper. Have Claude produce a one-paragraph summary plus the three questions. Keep the summary; it is your new briefing note.
4 Pro tip
Claude respects custom styles. Try “summarize in the voice of a cautious lawyer” vs. “summarize in the voice of an energetic startup founder” — the shift is dramatic and occasionally exactly what you need.
