Session 1: Practice Activities

Time to Practice!

6 activities to reinforce what you learned. Try them all!

Difficulty levels: Easy Medium Challenge

1 Object Sort Challenge Easy Activity

Collect 20-30 small objects (buttons, LEGO, coins, pasta shapes). Sort them 3 different ways. Draw or photograph each sorting. Which sorting revealed the most interesting pattern?

2 Pattern Spotter Walk Easy Activity

Take a 10-minute walk and write down every pattern you notice — in architecture, nature, traffic, people's behavior. Try to find at least 10 patterns.

3 Attribute Guessing Game Medium Group Activity

One person describes an object using only attributes (no names!). Others guess what it is. Play 5 rounds. Which attributes were most helpful for guessing?

4 Observation vs. Opinion Sort Medium Discussion

Write 15 statements on cards. Sort them into 'Observation' and 'Opinion' piles. Examples: 'The tree is tall' (observation about relative height) vs. 'The tree is beautiful' (opinion).

5 Nature Observation Journal Medium Writing

Observe one natural thing (a tree, a pet, the sky) for 5 minutes each day for 3 days. Record your observations in a journal with words, numbers, and sketches. Did you notice anything new on day 3?

6 Two-Attribute Sort Challenge Challenge Critical Thinking

Sort a collection by TWO attributes at once (e.g., size AND color). Create a grid or table showing the results. How many categories did you end up with? Were any categories empty?
