Session 3: Practice Activities

Time to Practice!

6 activities to reinforce what you learned. Try them all!

Difficulty levels: Easy Medium Challenge

1 Tally Mark Practice Easy Activity

Go to a window or outside area. For 10 minutes, tally mark every vehicle that passes by type: car, truck, bike, bus, other. How many total? What was most common?

2 Measurement Station Easy Activity

Measure 5 objects in your home using a ruler. Record each measurement with the object name, the measurement, and the unit. Example: 'Pencil — 19 cm.'

3 Run a Mini-Survey Medium Activity

Ask 10 people one clear question (like 'What is your favorite season?'). Record answers using tally marks. Summarize: which answer was most common? Least common?

4 Error Detective Medium Discussion

Read these 3 data collection scenarios and find the errors: (1) A student counted birds but kept losing count. (2) A surveyor changed their question halfway through. (3) A student measured height but forgot to write units.

5 Method Write-Up Medium Writing

Write a clear, step-by-step description of how you collected your survey data. Include: your question, who you asked, how many, how you recorded answers, and any problems you encountered.

6 Collect Three Ways Challenge Critical Thinking

Pick one topic (like 'snacks'). Collect data about it three different ways: survey (ask people their favorite), observation (watch what people actually eat), measurement (weigh different snacks). Compare the results. Did all three methods agree?
