Session 7: Practice Activities

Time to Practice!

6 activities to reinforce what you learned. Try them all!

Difficulty levels: Easy Medium Challenge

1 Misleading Graph Gallery Easy Activity

Find or draw 3 misleading graphs. For each, explain: (1) What trick is being used? (2) What does the graph make you think? (3) What does the data actually show?

2 Fix the Graph Easy Activity

Take one misleading graph and redraw it honestly. What changes? Does the story look different when the graph is fair?

3 Sample Size Experiment Medium Activity

Roll a die 5 times and record the results. Then roll it 30 times. Then 50 times. How close to equal distribution (each number appearing ~equally) do you get at each sample size?

4 Bias Spotter Medium Discussion

Read 3 survey scenarios and identify the type of bias in each: (1) Asking only dog owners about the best pet. (2) 'Don't you agree our school is great?' (3) A student who ignores data that contradicts their hypothesis.

5 Data Detective Report Medium Writing

Find a data claim in a news article, ad, or social media post. Write a detective report: What is the claim? What is the source? What questions would you ask? Do you trust it? Why or why not?

6 Create a Misleading Graph on Purpose Challenge Critical Thinking

Take a real, honest dataset and create a misleading version of the graph ON PURPOSE (truncated axis, changed scale, etc.). Then show both versions to someone and discuss which one they trust more and why.
