Session 1: Practice Activities
Time to Practice!
6 activities to reinforce what you learned. Try them all!
Difficulty levels: Easy Medium Challenge
1 Graph Type Identification Easy Activity
Look at 10 different graphs. For each one, identify: (1) the type (bar, line, pie), (2) what it is about, (3) one thing the data shows.
2 Bar Chart Deep Dive Easy Activity
Find a grouped or stacked bar chart in a textbook or online. Answer: What categories are being compared? What does each color represent? What is the main takeaway?
3 Line Graph Interpretation Medium Activity
Given a line graph of monthly temperatures for two cities, answer: Which city is warmer in summer? In winter? Which has bigger temperature swings? Where do the lines cross and what does that mean?
4 Pie Chart Creator Medium Creative
Track how you spend your time for one day in 30-minute blocks. Create a pie chart showing the results. Calculate the percentage for each activity.
5 Graph Reading Race Medium Group Activity
In teams of 2-3, answer 15 questions about 5 graphs. Each correct answer scores a point. Each wrong answer loses half a point. Accuracy beats speed!
6 Wrong Graph, Right Data Challenge Critical Thinking
Take a dataset and display it with the WRONG type of graph (like using a pie chart for data over time). Then display it with the RIGHT type. Write about why the correct choice communicates better.
