Dialogue Script — Session 8: Please and Thank You

A short bilingual conversation in Levantine Arabic that uses today's vocabulary. Read it together, take turns playing each part, then try without the script. By session 5, kids should be able to do this kind of mini-dialogue from memory — by session 8, they're getting really comfortable.


The setting

A brother and sister, Karim and Lina, are on the balcony in the late afternoon. Their mom (Mama) is bringing out a plate of fruit and some glasses of water. Karim accidentally bumps Lina's elbow and spills a little water.


The dialogue

Line 1 — Mama sets the plate on the small table

ماما: تْفَضَّلوا يا حَبايبي.

Mama: Tfaddalu ya habaybi. — Here you go, my loves.


Line 2 — Lina reaches for the water

لينا: ماما، ناوْليني المَي مِن فَضلِك.

Lina: Mama, naawlini al-mayy min fadlik. — Mama, pass me the water please.


Line 3 — Mama hands her the glass

ماما: تْفَضَّلي حَبيبتي.

Mama: Tfaddali habibti. — Here you go, my dear.


Line 4 — Lina takes the glass

لينا: شُكراً ماما!

Lina: Shukran mama! — Thank you, Mama!


Line 5 — Karim reaches across and bumps Lina's elbow. Water spills.

كَريم: آسِف آسِف! ما قَصَدِت.

Karim: Asif asif! Ma qasadit. — Sorry, sorry! I didn't mean to.


Line 6 — Lina wipes her hand on her shirt

لينا: مَعليش يا كَريم. شوي مَي بَس.

Lina: Ma'lesh ya Karim. Shway mayy bas. — No worries, Karim. Just a little water.


Line 7 — Karim hands her a napkin

كَريم: خُدي المَحرَمة، مِن فَضلِك سامْحيني.

Karim: Khudi al-mahrameh, min fadlik saamhini. — Take the napkin, please forgive me.


Line 8 — Lina smiles

لينا: العَفو حَبيبي. كُل تُفّاحة!

Lina: Al-'afw habibi. Kul tuffaha! — You're welcome, dear. Eat an apple!


How to use this script

First time — listen

  1. Read it together once, with you doing all three voices (Mama, Lina, Karim).
  2. Use a slightly different tone for each one — softer for Mama, quicker for the kids.
  3. Don't stop to explain every word. Let the rhythm carry it.

Second time — alternate

  1. You take Mama and Karim. Your child takes Lina.
  2. Or, if you have two kids, split it three ways. Even better.

Third time — switch

  1. Your child takes Mama. You take the kids.
  2. Hearing themselves say "tfaddali habibti" in a mama-voice is a small kind of magic. Let them feel it.

Fourth time — act it out

  1. Go to a balcony, a porch, or just the kitchen table. Bring real cups (water optional — or use empty ones if you want to skip the mess).
  2. Actually bump the cup. Actually say asif. Actually pass the napkin.
  3. The body remembers what the page can't teach.

Bonus vocabulary the dialogue exposes. You don't need to drill these — just let your child hear them. We'll teach some properly in later sessions:

You'll meet these again. For now, just letting them wash past the ear is enough.


A note on politeness in Levantine

Notice how often the family uses حَبيبي / حَبيبتي ("my dear") — even when someone is apologizing or saying thank you. In Levantine homes, politeness isn't stiff. It's warm. Shukran habibi is much more common than just shukran. Ma'lesh often comes with a smile and a hand on the shoulder.

Teach your child this: the words are only half of being polite. The tone is the other half. Say shukran like you mean it. Say ma'lesh like you really do forgive them. Kids pick this up faster than any vocab list.
