Dialogue Script — Session 21: My Bedroom

A short bilingual conversation in Levantine Arabic that uses today's vocabulary. Read it together, take turns playing each part, then try without the script. By now, kids should be able to do this kind of mini-dialogue from memory after a few read-throughs.


The setting

It's bedtime. Karim is in his bedroom, supposed to be getting ready for sleep — but his room is a mess and he can't find anything. His mom (Mama) comes in to check on him.


The dialogue

Line 1 — Mama opens the door and looks around

ماما: كَريم! غُرفَة نَومَك فَوضى!

Mama: Karim! Ghurfat nawmak fawda! — Karim! Your bedroom is a mess!


Line 2 — Karim, sitting on the floor

كَريم: بَعرِف يا ماما… ما لاقي وِسادْتي.

Karim: Ba'ref ya mama… ma laaqi wisaadti. — I know, Mama… I can't find my pillow.


Line 3 — Mama points to the bed

ماما: الوِسادة عَلى التَّخت، تَحت الحِرام!

Mama: Al-wisadeh 'ala at-takht, taht al-hiram! — The pillow is on the bed, under the blanket!


Line 4 — Karim lifts the blanket and laughs

كَريم: آه صَحّ! وَهَيدا كِتابي كَمان!

Karim: Aah sahh! W hayda kitaabi kamaan! — Oh right! And here's my book too!


Line 5 — Mama picks up a stuffed animal from the floor

ماما: وَهَي اللُّعبة؟ لَيش عَلى الأَرض؟

Mama: W hayy al-lu'beh? Laysh 'ala al-ard? — And this toy? Why is it on the floor?


Line 6 — Karim takes it, a little sheepish

كَريم: نِسيتها! بِحُطَّها عَلى التَّخت.

Karim: Nseeta! Bhuttha 'ala at-takht. — I forgot it! I'll put it on the bed.


Line 7 — Mama smiles and reaches for the lamp

ماما: يَلّا، تْصَبِّح عَلى خير. بْطَفّي الضَّوّ؟

Mama: Yalla, tsabbeh 'ala khayr. Btaffi ad-daww? — Okay, good night. Should I turn off the light?


Line 8 — Karim, snuggling under the blanket

كَريم: أَه، طَفّي الضَّوّ. تِصبَحي عَلى خير ماما!

Karim: Ah, taffi ad-daww. Tisbahi 'ala khayr mama! — Yes, turn off the light. Good night, Mama!


How to use this script

First time — listen

  1. Read it together once, with you doing both voices.
  2. Walk through it slowly. Point at things in the room as you say them — the pillow, the blanket, the lamp.

Second time — alternate

  1. You take Mama's lines. Your child takes Karim's lines.
  2. Karim's lines are shorter on purpose — easier for kids to grab first.

Third time — switch

  1. Your child takes Mama. You take Karim.
  2. Mama's lines are longer and use more location words (على التَّخت، تَحت الحِرام). That's the stretch.

Fourth time — act it out

  1. Do this in your child's actual bedroom. Seriously — it works better.
  2. Hide the pillow under the blanket before you start. Put a toy on the floor. Let the room be the set.
  3. Reach for the real light switch at the end. Turn it off. Say tisbah 'ala khayr in the dark. That's the memory that sticks.

What new words are in here (beyond today's main vocabulary)?

These are bonus words the dialogue exposes. Some will come up formally in later sessions — for now, just let your child hear them:

The location words — 'ala (on) and taht (under) — are the secret stars of this dialogue. Once kids own those two words, they can describe a whole room.


A note on the dialect

This dialogue is in Levantine spoken Arabic — the everyday Arabic of Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. You'll notice things like takht (bed) and daww (light), which are different from the Modern Standard Arabic words your child sees in the alphabet lessons (sarir, misbah).

Both are correct. Both are real Arabic.

Kids absorb both at the same time without confusion — the same way bilingual kids handle two whole languages. Trust the process.
