Dialogue Script — Session 24: Project: My Home Picture Menu

A short bilingual conversation in Levantine Arabic that uses today's vocabulary. Read it together, take turns playing each part, then try without the script. This dialogue pulls together words from all of Level 2 — rooms, food, body, and daily routine — because today is a review and project day.


The setting

A child (Karim) is sitting at the kitchen table with markers and paper. He's making a qa'ima — a picture menu of his house — for his project. His mom (Mama) is washing dishes nearby. It's Saturday morning.


The dialogue

Line 1 — Karim holds up his paper

كَريم: ماما، شوفي! هَيدي قائمة بَيتي.

Karim: Mama, shoofi! Haydi qa'imet bayti. — Mom, look! This is the menu of my house.


Line 2 — Mama dries her hands and comes over

ماما: واو، حِلوة كتير! شو رَسَمِت؟

Mama: Waw, hilwe kteer! Shu rasamt? — Wow, so pretty! What did you draw?


Line 3 — Karim points to the first picture

كَريم: هَون المَطبَخ. فيه خُبِز وَجِبنة وَتُفّاحة.

Karim: Hawn al-matbakh. Fee khubiz wa jibne wa tuffaha. — Here is the kitchen. There's bread and cheese and an apple.


Line 4 — Mama smiles and points to another corner

ماما: وَهَيدا شو؟ أوضِة النَّوم؟

Mama: Wa hayda shu? Odet an-nawm? — And what's this? The bedroom?


Line 5 — Karim nods proudly

كَريم: إي! فيها التَّخِت وَالكِتاب. أَنا بِنام هَون كُل لَيلة.

Karim: Ee! Feeha at-takht wa al-kitaab. Ana bnaam hawn kil layle. — Yes! There's the bed and the book. I sleep here every night.


Line 6 — Mama points to a small drawing in the corner

ماما: وَالبَلكون؟ وين البَلكون يا حَبيبي؟

Mama: Wa al-balcone? Wayn al-balcone ya habibi? — And the balcony? Where's the balcony, my dear?


Line 7 — Karim laughs and grabs a green marker

كَريم: آه! نِسيت! رَح إرسُم النَّباتات كَمان.

Karim: Aah! Niseet! Rah irsom an-nabataat kamaan. — Oh! I forgot! I'll draw the plants too.


Line 8 — Mama kisses the top of his head

ماما: بَيتَك حِلو يا كَريم. مَبروك القائمة!

Mama: Baytak hilo ya Karim. Mabrook al-qa'ima! — Your house is beautiful, Karim. Congratulations on the menu!


How to use this script

First time — listen

  1. Read it together once, with you doing both voices.
  2. Let your child just hear it. If they have their own qa'ima in front of them, even better — they can point to the rooms as you read.

Second time — alternate

  1. You take Mama's lines. Your child takes Karim's lines.
  2. Karim's lines are short and proud — let your child puff up a little when they say them.

Third time — switch

  1. Your child takes Mama. You take Karim.
  2. Mama's lines have more questioning words (shu, wayn, mabrook) — great practice.

Fourth time — act it out

  1. Use the qa'ima your child actually made this session. Hold it up. Point to real rooms in your real house.
  2. Walk to the kitchen and say hawn al-matbakh. Walk to the bedroom and say hawn odet an-nawm.
  3. The script becomes a tour. That's the whole point.

What new words are in here (beyond today's main words)?

These are review words from across Level 2, plus a few bonus expressions. Your child has met most of them before — this dialogue is the moment they all come together.

That's a lot of words! But your child has been hearing most of them since Session 13. This is the dialogue where you'll notice — oh, he understood that without me translating. That's Level 2 paying off.


A note on the dialect

Everything here is Levantine spoken Arabic — the everyday talk of Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. You'll notice balcone (a French borrowing), hayda/haydi (very Levantine — Egyptians say da/di, Gulf says hatha), and rah for "will" (instead of MSA sa-). These small differences are what make a dialect feel like home.

When your child labels their qa'ima in writing, they may use MSA spelling (like ـة on tuffaha). When they say it out loud, Levantine. Both are correct. Both are theirs.
