Dialogue Script — Session 32: At the Park

A short bilingual conversation in Levantine Arabic that uses today's vocabulary. Read it together, take turns playing each part, then try without the script. By the end of the week, kids should be able to do this kind of mini-dialogue from memory.


The setting

It's a sunny Saturday afternoon. Karim and his mom are at the neighborhood park (الحَديقة). Karim spots his friend Maya near the swings. The big tree in the middle of the park has a soccer ball sitting under it.


The dialogue

Line 1 — Karim runs ahead, pointing

كَريم: ماما، شوفي! مايا بِالحَديقة!

Karim: Mama, shoofi! Maya bil-hadiqah! — Mom, look! Maya is at the park!


Line 2 — Mama waves to Maya

ماما: مَرحَبا مايا! يَلّا كَريم، روح العَب مَع صَديقتَك.

Mama: Marhaba Maya! Yalla Karim, rooh il'ab ma' sadiqtak. — Hi Maya! Go on Karim, go play with your friend.


Line 3 — Karim runs to Maya near the swings

كَريم: مايا! بِدِّك تِركَبي عَلى المَرجوحة؟

Karim: Maya! Biddik tirkabi 'ala al-marjuha? — Maya! Do you want to get on the swing?


Line 4 — Maya shakes her head, pointing to the slide

مايا: لا، يَلّا عَلى الزَّحلَيقة الأَوَّل! بَعدين المَرجوحة.

Maya: La, yalla 'ala az-zahliqah al-awwal! Ba'dayn al-marjuha. — No, let's go on the slide first! Then the swing.


Line 5 — They slide down. Karim notices the ball under the tree.

كَريم: شوفي يا مايا — في كُرة تَحت الشَّجَرة!

Karim: Shoofi ya Maya — fi kura taht ash-shajara! — Look Maya — there's a ball under the tree!


Line 6 — Maya runs over

مايا: كُرة حَمرا! يَلّا نِلعَب!

Maya: Kura hamra! Yalla nil'ab! — A red ball! Let's play!


Line 7 — Mama calls from the bench

ماما: يا وْلاد، الحَديقة حِلوة اليوم! بَس خَمس دَقايِق وبِنروح.

Mama: Ya wlaad, al-hadiqah hilweh al-yawm! Bas khams daqayi' w binrooh. — Kids, the park is nice today! Just five minutes and we go.


Line 8 — Karim and Maya, together, kicking the ball

كَريم ومايا: خَمس دَقايِق كَمان ماما! يَلّا!

Karim and Maya: Khams daqayi' kamaan mama! Yalla! — Five more minutes mama! Come on!


How to use this script

First time — listen

  1. Read it through once with you doing all the voices. Move your hands. Point at imaginary swings.
  2. Your child just listens. No pressure to repeat yet.

Second time — alternate

  1. You take Mama and Maya. Your child takes Karim.
  2. Read slowly. Look up between lines.

Third time — switch

  1. Swap parts. Now your child takes Mama (the longer lines). You take Karim.
  2. This is the stretch. It's okay to stumble.

Fourth time — act it out

  1. Stand up. The couch is the swing. A pillow on the floor is the slide. A rolled-up sock is the ball.
  2. Walk through the whole scene. Run to your "friend." Pretend to slide. Kick the sock-ball.
  3. Don't look at the script. If you forget a word, say it in English and keep going. The shape matters more than perfection.

For classroom teachers: pair kids up, assign roles, and rotate. Bring a real ball if you can — kids will remember kura forever once they've kicked one while saying it.

These are bonus words your child picks up just from hearing the conversation. We'll formally teach some of them in later sessions — for now, just let them wash over:

You're not expected to memorize all of these. Just hear them. Over many sessions, they stop sounding foreign and start sounding like home.


A note on the dialect

The Arabic in this dialogue is Levantine spoken Arabic — what families actually say in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. A few things to notice:

Don't worry about sorting it all out. Kids absorb both Levantine and MSA naturally over time.
