Use Claude to Write Better

Write with Claude while keeping your own voice. You are always the editor.

~20 minutes
📌 Before You Start

What you need:

What you’ll do:

Write with Claude while keeping your own voice. Claude drafts. You decide what stays. You are always the editor — never just a copy-paster.

💡 The Big Idea

Claude can help you write — but your voice stays yours.

Claude is like a writing partner who drafts while you direct. The key is a simple rule:

Claude writes the first version. YOU decide what stays.

You

Give Claude the context, goal, and tone

Claude

Writes the first draft

You (editor)

Read it, change what doesn’t sound like you, add what’s missing

Result

Professional AND authentically yours

Don’t just copy-paste what Claude writes. Read it out loud. Does it sound like you? Change what doesn’t. That edit process is what makes the writing yours.

👀 See It

Here’s a real writing example. A student needs an extension on a paper:

The prompt they gave Claude:

“Help me write an email to my professor asking for an extension. I’ve been struggling with some personal stuff and I want to be honest but still professional. Not too long.”

What Claude drafted vs. what the student kept:

Claude’s first draft

Dear Professor Chen,

I am writing to request an extension on the upcoming paper deadline. I have been experiencing some personal challenges that have impacted my ability to complete the assignment to the standard I hold for myself.

Would it be possible to have until [date]? I appreciate your understanding.

Sincerely,
Jordan

After the student’s edits

Hi Professor Chen,

I’m writing to ask if I could have a short extension on the paper. I’ve been dealing with some personal things this week — nothing I need to get into, but it’s made it really hard to focus.

Even a few extra days would help a lot. Thanks for considering it.

Jordan

The student changed “Dear” to “Hi,” removed formal language that felt stiff, and added their own voice. The result is honest, warm, and professional — actually theirs.

🖐️ Try It

Think of something real you need to write. Use what’s actually on your to-do list — this is most useful when it’s a real task.

  1. 1
Identify what you need to write. An email, a text message, a social media post, a cover letter, a thank-you note — anything real.
  2. 2
Copy this into Claude and fill in the blanks:
    Copy this into Claude 👇
Help me write [what you need — email, message, post, etc.]. Here's the context: [explain the situation in 2-3 sentences]. The tone should be [casual / professional / warm / direct]. I want it to sound like a real human, not a robot.
  3. 3
Read what Claude writes. Now read it out loud. Does this actually sound like you? Circle or note what feels off.
  4. 4
Ask Claude to make specific changes:
    Copy this into Claude 👇
Make these changes: [list what you want changed — e.g., "less formal," "shorter," "remove the second paragraph," "add that I appreciate their patience"]
  5. 5
Do a final check: Does this sound like you now? Would you be comfortable sending it? If yes — it’s ready. If not — one more round of edits.
  6. 6
Use it. You just wrote something with real help — and it’s still genuinely yours.
🛑 You can stop here if you need a break. Your writing will be waiting.
🧠 Brain Break

Writing uses different muscles than reading. Give your body a reset.

Roll your neck gently side to side Unclench your jaw Relax your shoulders Take a slow breath

Seriously — unclench your jaw. Most people don’t realize they’re clenching.

✅ Wrap Up

The ONE thing to remember from this module:

Claude drafts. You decide. Your voice is irreplaceable — Claude is just here to help you get it out.

The goal is never to sound like AI. The goal is to sound like the best version of you — clear, intentional, and authentic. Claude helps you get there faster. The final word is always yours.
