Session 3: Practice Activities

Time to Practice!

6 activities to reinforce what you learned. Try them all!

Difficulty levels: Easy Medium Challenge

1 Coin Flip Experiment Easy Activity

Flip a coin 10 times, 30 times, and 60 times. Record heads/tails each time. Calculate the experimental probability at each stage. Does it get closer to 50%?

2 Dice Roll Experiment Easy Activity

Roll a die 36 times. Record each result. Calculate experimental probability for each number. The theoretical is 1/6 (~16.7%). How close are your results?

3 Convergence Graph Medium Activity

Using your coin flip data, create a line graph showing the running percentage of heads after every 10 flips. Watch the line converge toward 50%. This IS the law of large numbers in action.

4 Small Sample Trap Medium Discussion

A new restaurant has 5 reviews: 5 stars, 5 stars, 1 star, 5 stars, 5 stars. Average: 4.2. Another restaurant has 200 reviews averaging 4.0. Which would you trust more? Why?

5 Sports Probability Medium Research

Pick a sports team. Look up their win/loss record for the last 2 seasons. Calculate their win probability. Then look at a 5-game stretch where they won 4. Is this streak meaningful or expected variation?

6 Design a Convergence Experiment Challenge Critical Thinking

Design an experiment to test the law of large numbers with something other than coins or dice (spinner, cards, random number generator). Run it at 3 different sample sizes. Graph the convergence. Write a report on your findings.
