Dialogue Script — Session 6: I Am Big, I Am Small

A short bilingual conversation in Levantine Arabic that uses today's vocabulary. Read it together, take turns playing each part, then try without the script. By session 5, kids should be able to do this kind of mini-dialogue from memory — and we're already past that, so let's stretch.


The setting

A balcony in the late afternoon. Karim (age 6) is standing next to his big sister Lina (age 9). They're looking down at the street and at the plants their mom keeps in pots. Karim has just noticed he's grown — his head is almost up to Lina's shoulder.


The dialogue

Line 1 — Karim stands up tall, proud

كَريم: لينا! شوفي، أنا كَبير!

Karim: Lina! Shoofi, ana kbir! — Lina! Look, I'm big!


Line 2 — Lina laughs, puts her hand on his head

لينا: لأ يا حَبيبي، إنتَ لِسّا صَغير. أنا كبيرة!

Lina: La' ya habibi, inta lissa saghir. Ana kbireh! — No my dear, you're still small. I'm big!


Line 3 — Karim points at the flower pot, which is shorter than him

كَريم: بَس شوفي الزَّهرة! هِيِّ قَصيرة وأنا طَويل!

Karim: Bas shoofi az-zahra! Hiyyeh qasireh w ana tawil! — But look at the flower! She's short and I'm tall!


Line 4 — Lina nods, playing along

لينا: صَح! إنتَ طَويل أَكتَر مِن الزَّهرة. والزَّهرة حُلوة، مِش هيك؟

Lina: Sah! Inta tawil aktar min az-zahra. Wa az-zahra hilweh, mish heik? — True! You're taller than the flower. And the flower is sweet, isn't she?


Line 5 — Karim leans down to smell it

كَريم: آه، حِلوة كتير! حُلوة مِتلِك يا لينا.

Karim: Aah, hilweh ktir! Hilweh mitlik ya Lina. — Yeah, very sweet! Sweet like you, Lina.


Line 6 — Lina smiles, ruffles his hair

لينا: يا حَبيبي إنتَ! طَيِّب، إنتَ كَبير شْوَيّ. مَبروك!

Lina: Ya habibi inta! Tayyib, inta kbir shway. Mabrouk! — Oh you sweetheart! Okay, you're a little bit big. Congratulations!


Line 7 — Mama calls from inside

ماما: يَلّا يا وْلاد! تَعالوا، الأَكِل جاهِز!

Mama: Yalla ya wlaad! Ta'aalu, al-akil jaahiz! — Come on, kids! Come, the food is ready!


Line 8 — Karim runs in, Lina follows

كَريم: أنا كَبير وجوعان!

Karim: Ana kbir w jou'aan! — I'm big and hungry!


How to use this script

First time — listen

  1. Read it together once, with you doing all the voices.
  2. Make Karim's voice a little higher and prouder. Make Lina's voice a little teasing-but-loving.
  3. Don't worry about pronunciation. Let your child hear the music of it.

Second time — alternate

  1. You take Lina (and Mama). Your child takes Karim.
  2. Karim's lines are shorter and full of today's adjectives — perfect for a beginner.

Third time — switch

  1. Your child takes Lina. You take Karim.
  2. Lina's lines are the stretch — longer sentences, comparing things. That's the point.

Fourth time — act it out

  1. Stand up. Find a real plant or a stuffed animal to be "the flower."
  2. Do the shoofi (look!) with your finger. Do the standing-up-tall. Do the hair-ruffle.
  3. The body movements lock the words in. Kids remember what they acted out.

What new words are in here (beyond today's main 5)?

Bonus vocabulary the dialogue exposes. Don't drill these — just let your child hear them.


A note on adjective agreement

Notice how Karim says ana kbir (أنا كَبير) and Lina says ana kbireh (أنا كبيرة). Same word — but the girl form adds that little -eh sound at the end. Same with saghir / saghireh, tawil / tawileh, qasir / qasireh, hilu / hilweh.

This is one of the first big patterns in Arabic, and kids pick it up faster than you'd expect — especially if they hear it in a real conversation like this one. You don't have to explain the grammar. Just let them hear both forms, back to back, and their ears will figure it out.
